Akwete cloth, design A59: a woven wrapper cloth in navy & beige stripe with fringed ends, sold as a matching 2-piece set. Each piece is 45 x 85 inches – the classic wrapper width – so one piece ties as the wrapper (skirt) and the second as a top wrapper, stole, headwrap or matching blouse.
Akwete cloth comes from Igboland in south-east Nigeria (Akwete, Abia State) and is worn for traditional weddings (igba nkwu), chieftaincy and title ceremonies, burials, church thanksgiving and cultural days. It is also loved in Ghana, Togo and Benin as a kente-style woven wrapper, and by the diaspora for events and graduations.
