Habesha chiffon fabric for Ethiopian dresses
Chiffon has become the favourite fabric for the modern Habesha kemis. It is light, flows beautifully in a full skirt, and takes sequin and thread embroidery well, which is why chiffon dresses are worn for Meskel, Timkat, Enkutatash, weddings and church celebrations across Ethiopia, Eritrea and the diaspora.
Our Habesha chiffon is embroidered as a border: a deep sequin hem with vines, flowers or swirls rising from it, often with scattered buttis above. Tailors cut it straight into the skirt, sleeves and bodice, so the finished kemis has the embroidered edge exactly where it should be.
